Archaeological Museums in Israel/Palestine: Past and present

Abstract: The topic of this talk is the history of Museums in Israel/Palestine, starting from the first arcaheological exhibition – in one private room – by the British Consul in Jerusalem, James Fin, in 1849. A row of scholars and buildings is presented as we move through the periods (Ottoman Empire, British Mandate, and the State of Israel – noting also recent Palestinian Museums). This history is a show case of fabulous finds, innovative architecture, exccentric (or not) curators, and politics too. The shiny, polished vitrines can hide drastic shortages, messy stuggles for power, and mysterious “frozen” funds. We would try to question the roles that archaeological museums play and some ethics involved in their work.
