Abstrakt
This paper will explore a range of lively dialogues between Satan and other infernal characters in liturgical hymns and sermons in Syriac, Greek and Latin in the fourth to sixth centuries CE. Written to be sung and spoken in churches during Holy Week, these texts dramatically narrated the story of Jesus’ descent to hell and his conquest of Hades, death and the devil to teach numerous contemporary moral, exegetical, and theological lessons. Diabolical dialogues also brought Christian congregations into thought-provoking proximity with a wicked spiritual creature, and gave them the opportunity to mock, humiliate and trample on him anew. This paper will show how these liturgical texts served valuable didactic ends, and brought a story from the scriptural past vividly into the present.
