On 1 October 2015 we inaugurated the 5-year research project ‘Looking West: the European Socialist regimes facing pan-European cooperation and the European Community’ (or, more simply, PanEur1970s). Funded by an ERC Advanced Grant, the project is based at the History Department of the European University Institute.
PanEur1970s builds upon a previous experience of cooperative research in the field of socialist policies on European Cooperation, the results of which were published as a special issue of the European Review of History 21:2 (2014), “European Socialist Regimes facing Globalisation and European Cooperation: Dilemmas and responses”. The new project intertwines international and economic history approaches in order to provide a dynamic portrait of the Socialist élites’ paradigms, goals, and constraints in envisioning interdependence with Western Europe and dealing with the European Community, against the background of East-West détente and incipient globalization in the long 1970s. It connects the usually separate scholarships on Eastern and Western Europe and aims at broadening the scope of European cooperation and integration historiography beyond the EC experience. You may read more about the project on our website.
We are now advertising 3 Doctoral Research Grants related to the project. We aim at recruiting three talented students with a solid training and interest in one of the following sub-fields: Cold War history, modern European history, international economic history, studies on Communism. Each of the 3 PhD students will deal with one of the following socialist countries: Bulgaria, East Germany, Poland. They will be enrolled in the EUI Ph.D. Programme in History and Civilization and their grants will be paid for 4 years.
I would very much appreciate if you could help us reach the best candidates for these posts. To this end, please feel free to share this information with your colleagues and any of your students whom you deem both interested and worth your recommendation. You may want to circulate the call description in attachment or visit the project’s call webpage for detailed information on the candidates’ profile, and the EUI website for information about the online application procedure.
Thanks for your collaboration. With best regards,
Federico Romero
